Good BBQ isn’t that difficult to make- tasty sauce and tender cuts of meat- done. But great BBQ- now that takes a little something special- talent, secret ingredients and a whole lotta love- and that’s what I found in every bite from Barn Door BBQ.
Why do I keep my day job? Because of all the free food the heap upon me. Recently, the property managers threw a BBQ for us, the tenants. Quite frankly, I didn’t expect much: the standard burgers and hot dogs from Costco with Kraft bbq sauce, at best. When I went to the courtyard with my coworkers, imagine my surprise when there were steaming pans of hickory smoked shredded pork, pulled beef, pulled chicken, along with burgers and dogs that were anything but standard. Bad timing for a diet, but good timing for a Flying Colors Review! I started with the shredded pork with coleslaw- mouth watering. The pork was richly flavored, slightly tangy and perfectly complemented by the crisp coolness of the slaw. Texture- 5 stars: not stringy, just meaty deliciousness without an ounce of fat. I didn’t waste valuable stomach space on a bun. The next protein on my plate was a pile of smoked pulled beef, and I was floored by the flavor. Totally different than the pork- it was simmered in a heartier, spicier sauce, and it was exactly the same as the pork: fork tender, excellent quality meat that melted in your mouth. The chicken made a brief appearance on my plate- you know how white meat can sometimes be sticky and dry in your teeth…? Not this chicken- it was simply succulent. They must have slow roasted it whole and pulled it off of the bone before tossing it in a lightly sweetened barbeque sauce. Finger lickin’ good. Period. Believe it or not, I broke up this carnivore’s platter with a few sides- mac n cheese- creamy, homemade goodness. The pasta was perfectly cooked, just south of al dente. I could have eaten pounds of it, and would have if I had worn stretch pants instead of jeans! The baked beans were excellent, accented with diced bacon, onion and peppers throughout. I also tried the cold pasta salad- colorful and sprinkled with tomatoes, olives and zesty seasonings- delish. I could have made a total pig of myself and tried the cornbread, potato salad, house-patty burgers and plump beefy hot dogs, but my jeans politely informed me that I had sampled more than enough for the day. But everyone around me with the other entrées was clearly enjoying every bite, so I can only assume those dishes matched the quality of those that I had devoured. I met and chatted with one of the owners- she is a delightful and friendly entrepreneur whose pride in their cookin’ is easy to taste. The event ran like a well oiled machine thanks to her team; the lines moved quickly for the hundreds of folks at the luncheon, and the portions were generously delivered with a smile. I can’t wait until I need a community event catered, or have family or friends in town and want to spend time in a room other than the kitchen. I will be on the phone in a flash, then planning an outfit that involves an elastic waistband, because without a doubt~ Barn Door BBQ Passes with Flying Colors!
