Supporting a local business is always a pleasure- especially when it means that I get unique items and excellent service.
The Old Country Peddler, located inside of Esoterica in Leesburg, is just such a place. We popped in once while waiting for our table at The Wine Kitchen, just to browse. When we left, it was with a bag load of Christmas presents and the most delicious honey we've ever tasted.
This creamy, delectable honey is made by Trappist monks at a nearby monastery, The Holy Cross Abbey. The different flavors make it a versatile treat: lemon for my tea, almond- scrumptious with Wheat Thins or pretzels, raspberry- poured over yellow cake prior to baking, creating a confection beyond compare, cinnamon- in oatmeal or on toast... the list goes on. We shared some with visiting family members, who insisted that we take them to the O.C.P. so they could buy plenty to take home.
But this local hidden gem has so much more to offer than just spectacular honey: home décor with a distinctive Virginia touch, gourmet treats such as cashew and pecan brittle, homemade jellies and jams, or soups and breads. It's the kind of place you stroll through without an agenda and leave with a sack full of unexpected delights.
Next time you visit downtown Leesburg, you'll be glad you took a minute to just have a look, because~
