The Cajun Experience is a quaint little bistro in Historic Leesburg, but there is nothing small about the flavor and hospitality. We felt welcome from the moment we walked through the door, greeted by the friendly Elizabeth- our waitress. Though it was her first day, she made wonderful recommendations, and her smile was contagious. Zydeco and blues created a fun atmosphere, especially when my 10 year old began bopping and singing along with a Ray Charles tune.

We started with the Boudin Balls- deep fried sausage and rice balls served with a zippy Roumalade. Moist and full of flavor- I highly recommend them! The Boy had the sausage poboy- a fresh toasted roll stuffed with juicy, zesty Andouille Sausage- simple and fantastic. The Man ordered the special- Blackened Tilapia with Crawfish Etouffee. Because of my shrimp allergy I was unable to try it, but the wiped-clean plate and satisfied “mmm-MMMS” uttered repeatedly by The Man and The Boy were a good indication that it was as appetizing as it smelled. The portion was generous and according to the man- plenty of crawfish throughout the delicious, creamy sauce.

My meal was the chicken and sausage gumbo, and while I could have easily handled it a notch spicier- it was chock full of meat and oh so good. When the owner visited our table later, I learned that the roux they make gumbo with is Cajun- not Creole- style, so don’t look for okra or tomatoes in this authentic bayou dish!

No liquor license, but in true Southern fashion, they do serve sweet tea. Speaking of drinks- the Chicory Coffee is a must have on the side of your beignets for dessert. Who can resist square doughnut puffs liberally dusted with powdered sugar? No one in this house! They were light, fluffy and just the right touch to finish off our meal.

This review is short and sweet, like our visit to this eatery. Relaxed, enjoyable and a nice change of pace. The chefs here pour their hearts and talent into every dish- I was pleased with the personal touch of the owners greeting each table and their concern for our satisfaction. We’re looking forward to taking friends with us next time we go- nothing quite like being the one to introduce folks to a hidden gem! Welcoming, charming, and the most important “–ing” of all- tastING fabulous! (Ok I’ll need to work on that one…)

Anyway- go, eat,
Laissez les bon temps rouler- because~
