If you want fancy overpriced food and an atmosphere where being seen is more important than being fed, head to DC, or one of several “metro-burban” hot spots in Loudoun. But if you want a hefty plate of delicious, well-prepared food in an atmosphere where “everybody knows your name”, head to Spanky’s- where the food come first. Don’t misunderstand- Spanky’s is a very neat, nicely laid out, well-kept pub- modernized with big flat screen televisions everywhere. Hardwood floors gleam, tabletops and condiments are clean, and it’s comfortable. There are video games at the bar and in one corner to amuse kids of all ages. Spanky’s doesn’t TRY to be a neighborhood hangout- it simply IS. You go there to meet friends, watch sports, listen to great live music, and best of all- enjoy a really, REALLY tasty meal. I hate to take a chance on a place only to find that it’s not up to par, so I was thrilled when Spanky’s was so much more than I expected in terms of S.A.M. (Service, Menu, Atmosphere.) I popped in for lunch and was immediately greeted by a friendly waitress who seemed to know everyone who walked through the door, the loners, the couples, the friends, the cops, even the first timer- ME. She raved about the open face prime rib sandwich special as she took my drink order, and as tempting as it sounded- I had to try the Mulligan- Spanky’s version of the Reuben. Reubens are in my top three favorite sandwiches on earth, and I am not easy to please. I’ve been disappointed or just “meh” over most Reubens outside of Irish restaurants, New York and New Jersey delis. The corned beef has to be so tender that I don’t pull the sandwich apart trying to saw through the meat with my teeth. The sauerkraut has to be crisp but not dry. And of course- balance. Twice as much meat than kraut is a must. Spanky’s has one of the best local Reubens I have ever devoured. It exceeded every standard- every bite was filled with flavorful corned beef that fell apart without a fight, piled high between nicely toasted bread (which I prefer to grilled for at least five more pounds,) provolone cheese- I favor it to Swiss- and hearty sauerkraut. It was the perfect sandwich, served up with crisp, fresh fries. In the best interest of this review, I felt an obligation to try their chocolate chip pecan pie- you know, to let you folks know if it’s worth trying… the answer is –ooooh YES. Good grief, it was decadent: imagine that a pecan pie got into a tussle with a German chocolate cake. The pie wins, and takes the chocolate and coconut as its prize. Fabulous. Grab a steaming mug of coffee- they are oversized mugs of freshly brewed, piping hot java, and perfect with this, or any- pie. I will be a customer at Spanky’s again and again. Live music, great drink specials, relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere and those meaty, sizable, delicious sandwiches. I look forward to trying more items on the menu as soon as possible because~ Spanky’s Shenanigans Passes With Flying Colors!
