Bluz Brothers BBQ PDF E-mail
Taste in barbeque, like taste in cars, beer or the opposite sex, varies greatly from person to person. Sticky, hearty, wet KC style baby back ribs suit some of us, while smoked, dry-rubbed, tender featherbones makes others weak in the knees...
~
I am blessed- or am I cursed?- with the love for all different types of ribs, I’ve only met a few I didn’t like- apple and ginger glazed pork ribs, uh- no. Save that fancy stuff for a ham- keep my ribs simple, tender and finger lickin’ good.
Enter Bluz Brothers, with its bright, tasteful décor setting a fun tone- black and white checked tables paired with red chairs and booths, a slick, fully stocked bar lined with clears, large flat screen tv’s promises to deliver one party of a happy hour. Bluesy rock music enhances the atmosphere without hampering your conversation. Add to this, the friendly greeting as you walk through the door, and your experience here is off to a fine start.

The fare is a traditional bbq joint menu with a flair. I’ll tell you now- be sure to wash your hands before sitting down at the table- not just because your mother says so, but because you will be licking your fingers a lot in the next hour! They start you off with crisp house made potato chips, dusted with barbeque seasoning and served with a tangy, ranch-like dipping sauce. These chips beg you to order a beer to make the triad of flavors complete. My initial visit was the first week they opened and these chips were even better and more flavorful on my second visit about a month later. They have a simple yet wonderful menu of sides- baked beans with enough shredded meat and an smooth, flavorful base to make them one step away from chili. Their mac and cheese won’t make grandma jealous, but it is creamy, cheesy, and oh yeah- they offer it for adults too! You’ll enjoy their moist, slightly sweet cornbread as well- it’s oh so good.

Onto the meat… the pulled chicken sandwich was not edible- if you planned on using your hands! Tender meat complemented with a light brush of mesquite sauce and crunchy, lively coleslaw spilled beyond the borders of the soft roll. I added a slice of cheddar cheese since I am an admitted and proud turophile- I don’t care if its cheddar or brie- I need my cheese! To avoid looking like a complete slob, I used a knife and fork to dig in. It was delicious on its own with no added sauce, but because they allow you to choose your own sauce, I decided to try them all.
On the table you’ll find two vinegar based sauces, one with more pepper and zing, the other with a milder, traditional Carolina flavor. I actually preferred it on my fries. Bluz Brothers does not disappoint the KC bbq fans- which this Nebraska girl happens to be! It’s thick, rich, and bold- I am two outta three myself- no wonder I love this sauce! You can also try their spicy mustard for other items on the menu: burgers, sausage- it’s a zesty complement to... whatever you like to eat with mustard.

My mother and father finally let me in on the family secret rib recipe- I’m almost sorry I know it since it is a 2 day process, at minimum. But when followed to the letter, you can shake the bone, and the meat falls onto your plate, not an ounce of fat to be eaten around, and nothing left but a pile of bones that even a dog wouldn’t want to bother with.  I have very high expectations when it comes to texture, flavor and quality of my ribs. Bluz Brothers did not disappoint, and they keep getting better- improving from my first visit several weeks before. Smoky pork falls off the bone and has been well trimmed of fat. I enjoy dry rubbed meat, and their peppery mesquite rub is unlike any other I have ever tasted.

I like several different local bbq jpints and I am happy to add Bluz Brothers to the short list.
Bluz Brothers has a lot to offer is the way of S.A.M. (Service, Atmosphere, Menu) and the Broadlands is lucky to have such a bright spot of food and fun in its backyard. I can proudly send my friends and neighbors there because~
