Have you ever dined on a glass-enclosed rooftop, overlooking DC? Look no further than Tabaq Bistro for this unique experience... When you combine the breathtaking, panoramic view of DC with an innovative menu and a chic, upscale atmosphere, you get the basic recipe of Tabaq Bistro. We discovered this jewel of the Mediterranean back in 2005, and recently returned to find that it had only become better with time! Service- impeccable. A knowledgeable, friendly staff tends to your every need, from recommendations on mezze (small plates,) imported beers and wine pairings- we felt like we tried the best of everything on the menu. The hostess, waiter, bartender and manager all stopped by the table for one reason or another to ensure that our visit was a pleasant one. You can dress casually in jeans or arrive in your evening finest- Tabaq Bistro has a hip atmosphere that suits all styles. There was once a "no jeans" policy, but that has clearly ended since The Man was decked out in denim. The roof slid open halfway though our meal letting ina refreshing breeze. From four stories up we could see for miles! There were thick rolling clouds sliding across the sky, creating the surreal sensation of floating above the city. Mezze dining is unique in that you can actually try a dozen different dishes and not feel gluttonous or uncomfortably full, or spend a small fortune! I could rave about almost every dish on the menu that doesn't include shrimp (allergy) but I will limit it to two must haves: the Spinach Cigar Borak- cheese, fresh spinach and herbs wrapped and lightly fried, served atop a light, fragrant, tomato sauce. Mouthwatering cheesiness with no guilt since there is a vegetable within! The Lamb Shank- impossibly tender and juicy braised lamb served on a bed of mashed eggplant and cheese- this dish would be an excellent entree with a side of rice. The lamb simply flakes apart within a savory gravy that complements the eggplant perfectly. This is not to say that the other ten dishes we sampled aren't worthy of review- but you have to go and post your favorites here! Why should I ruin the delight of discovery for you... Next time you are out in about in the U Street Corridor, do yourself a flavor and try Tabaq Bistro. Interesting and delicious Mediterranean mezze and entrees plus a fully stocked bar with imported beers and a diverse wine list all mean one thing: Tabaq Bistro Passes with Flying Colors! www.tabaqdc.com Dinner is served Sunday through Thursday from 5:00pm until 11:00pm Friday through Saturday 5pm until 12:00am.
