There are two times that I most enjoy drinking wine: daytime, aaaand nighttime. So when the vintages were as tasty & original the offerings at Doukénie Winery, I decided to add “anytime” as a third time I will sip a glass of wine…

What a supremely enjoyable experience we had over Independence Day weekend at Doukénie… we tasted a number of varietals from a crisp, fragrant white Mandolin, to a robust, plummy Cabernet/Syrah blend. Sherry was our expert for the evening who conducted our tasting, and she was as engaging and delightful as the wines she poured for us! We felt like we were old friends by the time we completed our flight of wines. We became members before we even finished our tasting- one bottle a month such an easy obligation to fufill when we enjoyed so many of the wines!
The tour of the grounds and cellar gave us a behind the scenes glimpse of the love and care that is poured into every glass. We learned family history that included the unstoppable, indomitable Hope- the 80 something (which is the next 50 something!) year old matriarch of the family, the daughter of Doukénie. She is the inspiration behind Hope’s Legacy- an intensely fruity and deeply delicious raspberry Merlot that pairs perfectly with dark chocolate or on its own as he perfect liquid finish to your dining experience.
I could go on about the wines and their nuances, but I think wine is such an intensely personal choice- nothing I say can help you decide what you might like. What I can say is that you will have a delightful, relaxing, and delicious time when you visit Doukénie. Ducks and geese lazily hang out in the lake that is your view from the side patio… acres of land and old trees stretch with no strip malls or McMansions to interrupt your view of nature in its glory. You find your mind drifting into a place it hasn’t been in a long time… nowhere in particular. You forget the city, you forget work, you allow yourself to really get away and enjoy the simplicity of this gorgeous, beloved place.
Discover your favorite Doukénie wine and post here to share with us why you love it and what you pair it with! So far, I have paired my Mandolin with only a glass- and it has been divine! I may roast a chicken to go with it someday… or not. It goes without saying…
