Eggspectation~ Upscale American Dining PDF E-mail
I refuse to pollute this review with the obvious puns that the name of this delightful eatery inspires, unless I can think up one that is truly unique. That said- Eggspectation is everything it’s cracked up to be! (oops. Messed up already.)

Fantastic egg dishes that suit the traditional diner, like Classic Eggs Benedict, or the adventurous eater who would try the Oy Vegg- Potato Latkes with two eggs (any style), grilled tomatoes, and sour cream, served with Chef’s fruit garnish. But it is so much more than eggs: fresh original salads on a fresh variety of greens that taste almost too good to be healthy- my two faves: Avocado and Grilled Chicken Salad or the Eggspectation Salad- sliced black forest ham, turkey, swiss and cheddar cheese mixed with their house vinaigrette, garnished with grape tomatoes, cucumbers and a boiled egg. Any salad that I could easily slap between two slices of bread is aces in my book!

The bakery display looks like something out of the recesses of a dessert lover’s “happy place hallucination” - layers and layers of chocolate, hazelnut, creams and fruits- an impossible array of sweets that- while massive-are not overdone. They are not overly sweet, not a cacophony of flavors, but focused, perfected delights to top off your meal. From a plain cup of joe to a fancy flavored cappucino- they serve perfect, steaming java here which means a lot in this world of watered down or bitter coffee that we simply tolerate in so many other places.

When you enter Eggspectation, imagine a European café has exploded to seat over 100 people! Whimsical egg-cessories (dang it- it’s irresistible!) are scattered about, some obvious- some strategically placed for a fun game of “Eye Spy!” with your kids. The open kitchen is another special feature- The boy loves the watch the chefs create the fabulous omelets, the fine herb potatoes, and anything that cause flames to shoot up from the grill.

The friendly and efficient service has never let us down. Nothing is better than a knowledgeable server who can make appropriate reggomendations (damn- that’s a hard promise to keep!) based on the fact that they too enjoy the food at the restaurant. My last waiter recommended the crab cake sandwich to me, so I ordered it with a side of fruit. Spectacular. Hardly any filler- just delicious lumps of crabmeat and diced veggies formed and lightly grilled to perfection into a patty on a soft fresh roll. The fruit cup is endlessly refreshing with bananas, mangoes, blueberries, raspberries, snozberries (Willy Wonka fans you know!) and while I did miss their wonderful seasoned fries, my waistline was pleased that I chose fruit instead.

This Canadian-born restaurant has only four US locations, Chantilly being one of the fortunate cities. This upscale twist on a diner has no comparable competition- it is truly one of a kind. We take out of town guests and meet with friends, we go for date night, we do Sunday breakfast with The Boy- there is always a reason to dine there because~
